Food Waste Data - We Can All Help

How many times during the Christmas period and those summer catch ups have you got to the end of a meal and scraped a pile of leftovers into the bin?

While sometimes this is unavoidable - it does add up to a big impact on the planet. The data on food waste is pretty incredible. According to the Federal Government's environment department:

  • One third of the world's food is wasted.
  • 25% of water used in agriculture is used to grow food that is ultimately wasted – throwing away one burger wastes the same amount of water as a 90 minute shower.
  • Food waste produces eight per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions. If food waste was a country it would be the third largest greenhouse gas emitter, behind the USA and China.

Each year Australian's waste around 7.3 million tonnes of food which is around 300kg per person!

That's a huge problem - but what can one person do to help?

We can all play our part in reducing our food waste. As a start, we can be conscious to buy what we need. Realistically though - however well we try - we will always have scraps or leftovers. That's where composting is a great new years resolution!

One of our developers James Bedwell brings a container into The Red Fox office each day and collects everything compostable - our fruit and vegetable scraps, ground coffee - even our tea bags. Each night he takes the container home and adds it to his compost.

Composting is simple - here James shares a couple of quick tips to get you started.

  1. To get started a bin in your yard will do (even if a smaller one). You can always get a bigger one later on.
  2. Eat more vegetables for a healthy start to 2021!
  3. Make your compost bin pest proof. If it is just garden waste you can pile it up, however if it is vegetables and fruit make sure it is contained to avoid rodents!
  4. Have a small container in kitchen you can keep near your general waste bin.
  5. DON'T put the compost bin/heap at the other end of the garden - make it easier for yourself to reach to keep motivation high!
  6. If you don't have a garden, you can still compost with something like Bokashi.
  7. And if none of the above work for you - or you need more scraps - checkout Sharewaste

Tackling global food waste may seem like too big a problem to get your head around, but through just small steps like composting we can all start making a difference.
